Hotel stays: three-star accommodation or budget brand?

24 February 2017

Is it better to book a budget hotel or stay at a three-star? We asked two hotel industry insiders to make their case.

We asked the industry professionals from hotel brands Best Western Great Britain and Travelodge to explain the relative benefits of three-star properties versus budget hotel rooms. Here’s what they said…

Choose a three-star hotel, says Best Western Great Britain

Three-star hotels offer more for your travellers. All our properties offer free internet access; many offer meetings and leisure facilities on-site, too. Every guest at our three-star properties receives exceptional value in terms of quality and customer care. All our UK hotels are independently owned and managed by hoteliers who are passionate about what they do.

We deliver a level of personalised service that you wouldn’t expect at a budget hotel. Our award-winning customer service team can prearrange a guest’s favourite type of pillow or the type of tea they want in their room. Details make all the difference to a stay.

Unlike a cookie-cutter-style budget hotel, Best Western offers a home away from home. With properties ranging from coaching inns to castles, our hotels offer comfortable and characterful surroundings, with local food and drink served on-site, and all the extra touches that make a business stay more comfortable.

Our properties offer great facilities for doing business. Many offer conferencing and events spaces, so you can work and meet on-site. Plus we offer a range of benefits for business customers, including great group rates, easy booking through your travel management company and a fantastic rewards scheme.

You don’t need to book with a budget hotel group to have a great nationwide reach. With more than 260 properties across the UK, our hotels are often in great locations, offering a choice of city centre, rural and airport destinations to suit you.

Business travellers can trust the standards of a global brand such as Best Western. However, we also offer all the personalised customer care you’d expect from a local, independently owned hotel. And all our properties are assessed for quality on an annual basis to ensure standards remain high.

Do business on a budget, says Travelodge

We pride ourselves on offering great-value prices, allowing business travellers to keep costs down. We’re one of the UK’s biggest hotel chains, with a network of more than 500 hotels in all major cities and towns. In essence, you get everything that you need for a comfortable stay with a brand such as Travelodge, for a lot less than a three-star.

A great-value hotel doesn’t mean compromising on comfort or service. Travelodge has recently completed a £100m modernisation programme to upgrade all of its UK hotels to a new, contemporary design. The rooms have been designed by business customers, and are inviting, functional, warm and relaxing. In addition, staff are on hand 24 hours a day to help ensure you have a great stay.

Our rooms offer everything a business customer needs for a comfortable trip. All rooms offer modern en-suite bathrooms with power showers, a luxurious king-size bed, Freeview TV, desk area with power points and complimentary tea and coffee. All hotels have Wi-Fi, while irons, ironing boards and hairdryers are available from reception.

We offer plenty of services to suit business travellers. We understand the importance of waking up refreshed for the day ahead, and have introduced business floors (quiet floors) in 150 key business locations.

Travelodge also offers a self-check service and 150 hotels with a restaurant service. Breakfast starts at 7am in our dining areas; ideal for travellers who need to head off early. And for groups of 10 or more, we offer great rates and have a dedicated team to support customers and manage your booking.

Travelodge offers customers a good-quality product at the best price, rather than providing other incentives. That keeps our rates lower than three-star alternatives. Like with airlines, the best room rates are available if you book earlier.
