Working together to raise the bar in traveller wellbeing with Smarter working

1 July 2019

In an industry-leading initiative, we're co-creating our Smarter working wellbeing proposition with partners from the rail, air and accommodation supply chain to address the wellbeing agenda of our customers.

As people’s experience on trains, places and in hotels - the overall ‘trip environment’ - is critical to traveler wellbeing, representatives from supplier partnerships joined James Parkhouse, CEO of Capita Travel and Events, Jonti Dalal-Small, Head of Behavioural Science, and people from across Capita Travel and Events at Capita PLC’s head office in London for the Smarter working workshop and forum.

The workshop was hosted by Capita Travel and Events’ Behavioural Scientist, Jonti Dalal-Small, and comprised a combination of key business themes and challenges, as well as practical workshops to apply Smarter working into the everyday trip environment.  More than just travel, the Smarter working approach helps with wider organisational objectives of productivity, connectivity, health, wellbeing and attrition.

“People originally used us for booking and billing… ten years on, that has matured and it is expected as our core offering. Our customers ultimately want to make smarter decisions,” stated James Parkhouse. “Four years ago we started on this path. There has been a shift in demand for data usage and has been a culmination of Smarter working.”

Discussions focused on traveller wellbeing and explored current booking models and nudging, working in innovative ways to shape travel policies with cost efficiencies and value in mind.

The workshop also looked at the developments Capita Travel and Events had made in its Smarter working proposition, a combination of psychology, data analytics and product development to deliver insights, with feedback from partners about their own challenges and how they can work together on this approach to shape their wellbeing agenda.

Partners left the eye-opening, interactive workshop questioning if they are promoting the right kind of travel with Capita, and reaching out to colleagues to take action and put the workshop learnings into practice for travellers and guests.

Lynn Fraser, Sales Director of Village Hotel Club, came away with a new focus on ‘wellbeing nudges’: “I personally loved Capita Travel and Events’ approach to how they will differentiate themselves from others and I am excited that we are partners on this journey with them.”

“Designed to bring Smarter working to life, the workshop was about developing a shared understanding of the Smarter working framework and how the mind decides – looking at what we can do as a travel management company alongside our partners,” explained Jonti. “Our mission to revolutionise the travel industry with Smarter working and influence positive behaviour change into practice.

“Smarter working is giving us the commercial edge and by hosting workshops like this we can get the necessary insight to drive change and value. Behaviour change is difficult for our Partners to tackle along, so we want to work when them to help make positive changes to their wellbeing approach. Partners left feeling inspired, with an energy to work together to create new ways of managing travel as we continue to lead the industry.”

Since the workshops commenced, over 100 Capita employees have attended in the last year. There are plans to roll-out Smarter working workshops with further internal training as well hosting Smarter working workshops in relation to meetings and events.
